Appliance Maintenance Is Crucial during the Holiday Season

Holiday appliance maintenance may not be on your holiday checklist this year, but it should be. The turkey dinner with sweet cranberry sauce you are planning to cook for your big celebration could turn into Chinese takeout from a local restaurant if a kitchen appliance randomly quits working. While restaurant-style noodles and wontons taste delicious, they may not measure up emotionally to your home cooking and favorite holiday recipes.

That is why it’s important to ensure that each major appliance is functioning properly before the festivities begin. Include these three items on your holiday checklist to ensure your celebration is as memorable as you imagined it to be.

Test Everything

The first item to cross off on your holiday appliance maintenance list is to test everything. According to a survey of more than 381,000 appliances collected by Consumer Reports , more than 6 percent of people reported problems with their gas burners, ovens, or cooktop elements. In some cases, the gas ignition was broken, or the oven wouldn’t heat up, and 11 percent said their dishwashers weren’t cleaning correctly.

A week or two prior to your holiday celebration, grab your favorite cookbook and do some experimenting. Now is the time to make those cream puffs you have been wanting to try or take a jab at baking homemade sourdough bread. Once you are finished with cooking, load all the dirty dishes into the dishwater and make sure everything comes out clean. Using and testing your appliances in advance like this will give you time to schedule maintenance or repairs before the holidays.

Do Some Deep Cleaning

The holiday season is the best time to do a round of deep cleaning. Before you pull out your decorations, take some time to clean your most-used appliances. On your fridge, clean the coils on the back or bottom of the appliance using a vacuum and brush attachment. For your dishwasher , place a dishwasher-safe cup of white vinegar on the top shelf and run a full cycle. For your oven and stove top, make sure to thoroughly wipe all the grime away and check to see that all the stovetop burners turn on. Taking these few extra steps in your cleaning regime will make the holidays more stress-free.
